Of Mi’kmaq aboriginal heritage, Mark Penney has been a practicing artist since an early age. After a successful commercial arts career, working in a variety of applied graphic arts, design and marketing Penney has also worked in fine art reproduction and digital printmaking.
Penney is currently the founder and operator of the fine-art Mark Penney gallery in Ucluelet. Arts BC’s first director for Indigenous Outreach and Support, Penney, with future support from Arts BC’s Insight Team’s Indigenous Arts Engagement Advisor, provides culturally appropriate support for aboriginal arts organizations and communities and works to increase positive partnerships, at both board-level and at membership-level, between and within both aboriginal and non-aboriginal communities.
President of Pacific Rim Arts Society during a time of transition, Penney has been involved in the rapid evolution, expansion and marketing of contemporary arts programming. Penney has been a very active member volunteer with Arts BC’s conference committee in 2015-16 prior to joining the board in spring 2016, as the Pacific Rim Arts Society will be the local host for Arts BC’s annual conference in 2017.
